Otherwise known as jimsomweed, or can also be called locoweed. I have heard it is also a hallucinogenic if even slightly touched.

Introduction


Native to South America, the herbacious angel's trumpet plant is from the solanaceae family, brugmansia genus. Angel's trumpet thrives in warm soils, with full- to partial sun, and moderate water. Its beautiful fragrant white flowers bloom from late summer to early winter in warmer climates, and from late spring to early fall on the south-west coast. The large 10-12" blooms are generally white, sometimes tinged with slight hints of pink or lilac, and their smell attracts butterflies, fireflies, and bees. The velvety-soft grey-green bush can grow between eight to ten feet in diameter, and the weed-like plant will require much space to creep and crawl.





Chemicals and Poisoning


Though a popular plant especially among enthusiasts of moongardens, all parts of the plant are known sources of the three tropane alkaloids, atropine, hyoscine, and hyoscyamine. These alkaloids are narcotic toxins, which can be fatal if ingested. Due to the fact that many of the non-fatal cases of angel's trumpet poisoning go unreported, it is difficult to be sure of the exact number of poisonings each year.

Reply:I have this plant growing in my garden in NC. Began in spring about a foot tall and is now eight feet tall. Don't know about it being hallucinogenic but the flowers look like trumpets hanging down about 8inches or more. I have a variegated leafed one and my neighbors is solid. Colors range from coral to pink. We treat it as an annual in zone7. New plants cost about 10-15 dollars. I have not tried to winter-over one. Good luck. The profusion of "trumpets" can be spectacular. I'll ask my neighbors if their plants have made them more"loco" than usual.
Reply:The name Jimson Weed is usually applied to Datura species and Angels Trumpet to Brugmansia. These are very closely related genera and both of them contain potentially deadly alkaloids ... these chemical components *can be* hallucinogenic but there is almost no safe way to get the dosage right ... people have died trying it.
Reply:You can die from ingesting any part of this plant! Don't do it! It kills you by shutting down your kidneys....very painful.





These plants take a lot of water and a lot of fertilizer.
